Sometimes, especially with Horror, a film that not only causes controversy (which may actually have a positive impact on box office numbers) but is even banned. Typically this happens internationally, but there have even been popular fear mongers banned in at least one part of the US. The following films were banned either domestically, internationally or in both countries. Since these are of course well-known films, the bans have now been lifted. At least for the most part. And of course, with the Internet, even films or episodes of television series that have been difficult to find over the years always find a way to secure a gradually growing group of fans.

In the case of a film that may be marketed a little to So, The ExorcistThe notoriously scary trailer was enough to piss off people at home. As a result, the film was banned in certain parts of the United Kingdom, as was the preview.
But of course William Friedkin’s film was allowed in more cinemas than banned. It’s not only one of the most successful horror films of all time, but also one of the most successful films ever (taking inflation into account, of course).

Tobe Hooper is magnificent and thoroughly frightening The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Although the film is largely bloodless and much of the violence is left to the viewer’s imagination, several international countries have stopped broadcasting the film due to complaints about the violence. For example, while the film ran for a year in London, it was still banned in Britain from 1974 to 1998.
The film also had great difficulty getting a release in Australia (banned 1974-1984), Iceland (banned 1985-1999), Norway (banned 1974-1997), West Germany (1974-1978), Sweden (1974-2001) and even two theaters in Ottawa, Canada.

director Steven R. Monroe
Pour Sarah Butler, Chad Lindberg, Daniel Franzese, Tracey Walter, Jeff Branson, Rodney Eastman
Evaluation R
Main genre crime
How Last house on the left but even more grotesque and uncomfortable, I spit on your grave has understandably been banned in several international countries. In the US, the MPAA went out of its way to give the film an X rating, but after some back and forth with director Meir Zarchi, the film received an R rating (which still feels like an oversight despite the cuts made) .
As for international areas, I spit on your grave was completely banned in Ireland, Norway, Iceland and West Germany. Canada also initially rejected the release nationwide, but then left it up to each individual province to decide for themselves about release.

director Ruggero Deodato
Pour Robert Kerman, Francesca Ciardi, Perry Pirkanen, Luca Barbareschi
Evaluation Without rating
Main genre Horror
When Cannibal Holocaust When it was first released, people couldn’t tell if it was real or not The Blair Witch Project. The film, shot in the Amazon rainforest, doesn’t seem inorganic, nor does the vast amount of blood.
And those copious amounts of blood got the film into trouble. For one thing, the director got arrested over the film (at least for a short time), not just on obscenity charges, but also because people thought they had actually just seen a series of murders on screen. Even after director Ruggero Deodato’s release, his film was banned in Italy and Australia because of its graphic content.
Cannibal Holocaust is available to stream on AMC+, Kanopy, Shudder and Peacock
6 The Evil Dead (1981)
The evil death
Release date September 10, 1981
director Sam Raimi
Pour Bruce Campbell, Ellen Sandweiss, Richard DeManincor, Betsy Baker, Theresa Tilly, Philip A. Gillis
Evaluation R
Main genre Horror
While Sam Raimi calls it a “nasty video”. The evil death is now much more than just an ice-cold classic. In the United States, the film initially received an X rating, which was then changed to NC-17 when this rating change took effect.
It has received similar treatment in several international territories, where it has been banned outright in countries such as Finland and Ukraine, but the same principle applies to its increasing availability as elsewhere. Also called “video nasty” The evil death wasn’t hard to get, and that’s at least partly because the domestic media releases were without an MPA rating.
The Evil Dead is available to stream on AMC+

Land of the Dead
Release date June 24, 2005
director George A. Romero
Pour Simon Baker, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, Asia Argento, Robert Joy, Eugene Clark
Evaluation R
Main genre Horror
While George A. Romero’s return to his prized IP with Land of the Dead had to make some cuts to secure a theatrical release, but otherwise it ran relatively smoothly. However, it was banned in Ukraine.
Why? Because it brought back memories of the German attack on Kharkiv in 1943, which caused a man-made famine that eventually led to cannibalism. The Ministry of Culture found that any film depicting cannibalism was particularly distasteful.
Land of the Dead is available to stream on DirecTV, AMC+, Starz and Peacock

Hostel: Part II
Release date June 8, 2007
director Eli Roth
Pour Lauren German, Roger Bart, Heather Matarazzo, Bijou Phillips, Richard Burgi, Vera Jordanova
Evaluation R
Main genre Horror
Hostel: Part II had even more difficulty achieving a release than the original film, despite playing relatively unaffected in the United States for the most part. But there were definitely problems in the overseas territories. This included New Zealand, where the film was banned entirely after the distributor refused to make changes.
The biggest problem arose from a scene that conflated torture and “sexual gratification.” And for a year, Sony Pictures refused to cut the scene, Hostel: Part II remained banned in the country. But of course the pursuit of profit prevails, and in the end Sony achieved the breakthrough.
Hostel: Part II is available to stream on fuboTV, Pluto TV, and Plex

Banned by the British Board of Film Classification for its “sexually violent and potentially obscene” content. The human centipede II (complete sequence) The IP didn’t gain any new fans after the grotesque original. It also had difficulty achieving release in Australia, where the release was initially banned due to “cruel, disturbing and sexually explicit content.”
The film was and is banned in New Zealand for essentially the same reasons as it was temporarily banned in Australia. In other words, The Human Centipede II (full sequence) No easy release secured anywhere.

1 The Last House on the Left (1972)
The last house on the left
Release date August 30, 1972
director Wes Craven
Pour Sandra Peabody, Lucy Grantham, David Hess, Fred J. Lincoln, Jeramie Rain, Marc Sheffler
Evaluation R
Main genre Horror
A grotesque but nevertheless important film, The last house on the left deserves its controversy. Was it an impressive and memorable debut for Wes Craven? You can bet on it. Does it get harder to watch as the decades go by? Without doubt.
Back in the early 1970s, during the film’s marketing campaign, it was heavily touted as a film that would not leave audiences feeling good. And that is certainly not the case. But technically it’s a very good film with absolutely disgusting antagonists and sympathetic protagonists, making everything that happens to the former feel deserving and everything that happens to the latter feeling particularly heartbreaking. The last house on the left stays with you, except for those in the UK, where it was banned until 2002.
The Last House on the Left is available to stream on Paramount+, fuboTV, Redbox, Crackle and Freevee
