With Opposition MPs keeping up their call for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into allegations against the Adani Group, and BJP members demanding an apology from Rahul Gandhi over his remarks in the UK, Rajya Sabha barely functioned on Wednesday. In the morning session, the House was adjourned within 12 minutes.
Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar said he had received 11 notices in seven categories under Rule 267, which relates to suspension of day’s business to discuss urgent matters of national import, when he was interrupted by sloganeering by Opposition MPs. Dhankar adjourned the House until 2 pm.
Soon after, Congress’s Jairam Ramesh tweeted, “Parliament adjourned till 2pm because of Modi Govt’s refusal to allow opposition to raise demand for JPC… Opposition parties will be handing over a letter to ED shortly to begin investigating Adani for various scheduled offences.’’
At 2 pm, when the House reconvened, it was adjourned for the day within three minutes. As Dhankhar gave the floor to Kharge to speak, and the latter began speaking about the Opposition’s letter to the ED director, members of Treasury benches began shouting the slogan “Rahul Gandhi maafi maango”.
Dhankhar said, “If we don’t express here, where will we express,” and asked Leader of the House Piyush Goyal to set his team in order. As slogans continued, he adjourned the House for the day.
