Director of ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ Announces End of the Franchise
Despite achieving record-breaking ticket sales, the director of The Conjuring: Last Rites, Michael Chaves, has confirmed that the series will not continue. In a discussion with ComicBook, Chaves made it clear that this installment serves as the concluding chapter to the saga. “It’s over. This is definitively the last installment – hence the title Last Rites. There won’t be any more Conjuring films. It’s definitively the conclusion,” he stated. This revelation has come as quite unexpected to the fans, especially given the film’s substantial box office success.
Launched more than ten years ago, The Conjuring franchise rapidly evolved into a titan within the horror genre. The series centers on the eerie exploits of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga respectively, whose characters are inspired by a real-life couple. Each entry in the series explores a distinct supernatural encounter that the duo reportedly faced.
Together, the main films and their spin-offs have amassed a staggering total of over $2 billion globally. The Conjuring: Last Rites itself set a new opening weekend record for the franchise, raking in $83 million, although it sparked mixed opinions among fans about whether it was a fitting finale for such an iconic series.
The film currently holds a 59% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a stark contrast to the original The Conjuring movie from 2013, which opened to much positive acclaim and maintains an 86% score. However, the third film in the series also received lukewarm reviews, similar to this latest release, with a rating of 56%.
Last Rites showcases the Warrens tackling their final paranormal case in Pennsylvania, where they face off against a demon with ties to Lorraine’s past. While some reviews praised the movie as a “touching finale” with “good scares,” others criticized it for relying too heavily on clichés and not meeting expectations.
Despite Chaves’ definitive statements about the franchise’s end, there remains a possibility for The Conjuring universe to be revived, given its undeniable popularity and financial success. There could be further explorations into its universe, particularly through its successful spin-offs like The Nun and Annabelle.
Vera Farmiga has officially bid farewell to her role as Lorraine Warren. Renowned for her performances in The Departed, Orphan, and Bates Motel, she is slated to star in the upcoming film The Billion Dollar Spy, which also features Russell Crowe and Willa Fitzgerald. Patrick Wilson, who portrayed Ed Warren, has also departed from the franchise, known for his roles in Insidious and The Phantom of the Opera.
