James Wan has provided an update with mixed feelings about his long-awaited film adaptation of Call of Cthulhu.
Wan, renowned for creating the Insidious, Saw, and Conjuring series, had initially announced his involvement in bringing H.P. Lovecraft’s horror story to the big screen in late 2023, after having independently worked on its development for five years. Since then, there have been few developments about the project, with Wan mentioning in April 2024 that pitching the script was proving to be challenging.
Recently, in light of Lee Cronin’s The Mummy release, Ash Crossan from ScreenRant spoke with James Wan who confirmed that the Call of Cthulhu project is still active. Wan expressed his long-time desire to make the film but acknowledged the difficulty, noting that films based on Lovecraft’s work are typically expensive to produce. He admitted that these types of films are “very hard to try and get off the ground,” but reassured fans that he would continue to work towards making it happen.
Adaptations of Lovecraft’s narratives have varied greatly over the years, ranging from Stuart Gordon’s distinct interpretations in Re-Animator and From Beyond, to the cult favorite Dunwich Horror. Filmmakers like John Carpenter with In the Mouth of Madness, William Eubank with Underwater, and David Prior with The Empty Man have also drawn inspiration from Lovecraft.
Wan is not alone in facing financial obstacles in adapting Lovecraft’s stories. Guillermo del Toro’s collaboration with Universal Pictures and James Cameron on At the Mountains of Madness was halted due to high production costs and some plot similarities with Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. Although del Toro revisited the idea in early 2024 considering an animated approach, the project remains on hold.
While Wan has not disclosed specific budget figures, he implies that financing a Lovecraftian movie is challenging, especially given that the genre has seen no significant box office success recently. Films like Underwater and Empty Man performed poorly, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic and in the case of the latter, a lack of marketing. Even well-received films such as Color Out of Space and Suitable Flesh struggled at the box office due to limited theatrical releases.
Despite financial barriers, Wan’s track record might still attract the necessary producers. His directorial projects have collectively earned over $4 billion worldwide, with hits like Aquaman and Furious 7 under his belt, while his horror films have generally been successful, except for 2021’s Malignant which underperformed due to its simultaneous release on HBO Max and during the pandemic.
Having spent considerable time directing blockbuster films, Wan’s potential return to horror with Call of Cthulhu is eagerly awaited. With a compelling script, the project could soon gather momentum. However, with Wan currently busy with the English adaptation of The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil for Paramount, it might take some time before he can fully commit to the Lovecraft adaptation.
