Rosaleen, a new cinematic project from filmmakers Nick Waterman and Meg Washington—the minds behind How to Make Gravy—has been announced. The feature film, under the production of Schuyler Weiss (Elvis), promises to blend romance and music in a narrative centered around the Sydney Opera House.
Developed by Waterman and Washington’s Speech&Drama Pictures, Rosaleen is set to be a romantic musical that delves into a lesser-known love affair that influenced the creation of the iconic Sydney Opera House.
The official description of the film reveals that it will portray the story of Rosaleen Norton, known as the ‘Witch of Kings Cross,’ and her clandestine relationship with Sir Eugene Goossens, a British conductor. Goossens played a crucial role in the development of the Sydney Opera House during the peak of his career in the 1950s.
Nick Waterman will helm the project as director, writer, and producer, while Meg Washington will contribute as writer, producer, and composer.
The duo of Waterman and Washington had previously worked together on How to Make Gravy. Washington also showcased her musical talents by writing original songs for The Deb, a film directed by Rebel Wilson that concluded the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. Weiss, like his previous collaboration with Waterman and Washington on How to Make Gravy, joins them once again as a producer for Rosaleen.
“We are thrilled to shine a light on this captivating, yet largely forgotten, true story from Australian history, bringing it from obscurity into the limelight of cinema,” stated Waterman and Washington about their upcoming film.
