Venice Film Festival Sets Competition Jury: Kaouther Ben Hania & Johnnie To Among Those Under Prez Maggie Gyllenhaal

The Venice Film Festival has announced its international jury, chaired by Maggie Gyllenhaal.

The jury for the Venezia 83 Competition will consist of notable figures including Tunisian filmmaker and writer Kaouther Ben Hania; British composer and performer Daniel Blumberg; Italian academic Francesco Casetti; French filmmaker and writer Xavier Giannoli; Afghan filmmaker and writer Shahrbanoo Sadat, and Hong Kong filmmaker and producer Johnnie To.

Scheduled from September 2 to 12, 2026, the festival is organized by La Biennale di Venezia and will be managed by Artistic Director Alberto Barbera.

The jury will be responsible for awarding several prestigious prizes including the Golden Lion for Best Film, the Silver Lion – Grand Jury Prize, Silver Lion for Best Director, Coppa Volpi for Best Actress, Coppa Volpi for Best Actor, Special Jury Prize, Award for Best Screenplay, and the “Marcello Mastroianni” Award for Best New Young Actor or Actress, with a rule against any joint awards.

Highly anticipated films expected at Venice this year include Bunker, Wild Horse Nine, and Bucking Fastard. Despite this, the festival faces similar challenges as Cannes regarding the pullback of major film studios.
