Sydney Sweeney is set to star in an upcoming Netflix project.
Over the past few years, Sydney Sweeney’s career has experienced a meteoric rise. Starting with minor roles in series like The Handmaid’s Tale and Sharp Objects, she eventually gained global recognition for her portrayal of Cassie Howard in HBO’s hit series Euphoria. Subsequently, she has taken on lead roles in major films such as The Housemaid and Anyone But You. Now, she is currently the center of attention as Netflix takes on her latest significant project.
A recent update from What’s on Netflix confirmed that the filming for the live-action adaptation of Gundam has been completed. The project, which began production in April, is directed and written by Jim Mickle, known for Sweet Tooth, and features Sweeney alongside Noah Centineo. This development is a significant step forward, especially considering that it took five years from when Netflix acquired the franchise rights in 2021.
The Gundam franchise is an iconic part of Japanese sci-fi and has significantly influenced global pop culture by pioneering the “real robot” mecha genre. Since its inception in 1979 by creators Yoshiyuki Tomino and Hajime Yatate for Sunrise (now Bandai Namco Filmworks), the franchise has evolved into a $20 billion industry. It began with the TV series Mobile Suit Gundam, which was later condensed into a movie trilogy, and has since expanded with numerous other releases.
The upcoming Netflix film marks the first major live-action adaptation of the Gundam series. It presents a unique narrative where Sweeney and Centineo play opposing mech pilots from rival factions embroiled in a vast interplanetary conflict between Earth and its former colonies. The cast may also include musician Benson Boone and Drew Starkey from Outer Banks, with Jason Clarke briefly joining before departing the project for undisclosed reasons.
“As their paths cross amidst shifting alliances and escalating threats, they find themselves in a race across the cosmos that could determine the future of humanity. Featuring grand battles, deep personal moments, and a scale of epic proportions, this portrayal of Gundam is unlike any seen before,” the film’s description reads.
At a recent Gundam conference, Mickle shared insights into the adaptation, stating, “Our version of Gundam is a vast narrative centered around warfare and conflict, yet at its core, it remains a profoundly human story. We’re constructing incredible sets and featuring both iconic and new ships and mobile suits, which we are eager to introduce to our audience.“
As of now, the official release date for Gundam has not been announced, but it is anticipated to premiere in 2027.
