The 51st edition of the Toronto Film Festival began on Thursday, September 10, 2026, ushering in a 10-day spectacle filled with gala events, premieres, and screenings that play a pivotal role in the awards season narrative. Held as part of the autumn festival circuit which includes Venice and Telluride, this year’s festival opened with the premiere of Being Heumann, a film by Academy Award winner Siân Heder, known for her previous Oscar-winning movie CODA.
The festival proudly showcased a variety of world premieres from renowned directors including Peter Farrelly’s I Play Rocky, John Madden’s Onwards and Sideways, Chris Rock’s Misty Green, and Anton Corbijn’s A Talent for Murder.
Furthermore, TIFF this year also introduced the world premieres of Prima Facie by British director Susanna White featuring Cynthia Erivo, and The Assassin(s) by Korean director Hur Jin-ho, known for his 2023 film A Normal Family.
