The Ukrainian Air Force reported a Russian Su-24M bomber shot down as it attempted to fire missiles at targets in Odessa Oblast, the Ukrainian Air Force commander said in a Dec. 5 post on Telegram.

Lieutenant General Mykola Oleschuk stated that a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile shot down the aircraft disguised as a Su-30SM fighter jet as the Russian military planned an attack on the southern part of Odessa Oblast.

Since the beginning of the Russian war in Ukraine, there have been repeated attacks on targets in the Odessa Oblast. Odessa is located on the Black Sea and serves as a central trading port in the region.

Snake Island, 35 kilometers from the Odessa Oblast mainland, is synonymous with Ukrainian resistance. On February 24, 2022, at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, a Ukrainian border guard famously responded, “Russian warship, screw you,” when asked to surrender by the Russian Navy.

The occupation of Snake Island effectively allowed Russian forces to launch a blockade of Odessa’s Black Sea ports and direct missile attacks against Ukraine until Ukraine successfully sank the Moskva, the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, on April 14, 2022.

President Volodymyr Zelensky marked 500 days of Russia’s all-out war by visiting the island earlier this year with a video filmed on Snake Island promising that Ukraine will retake every part of its territory currently occupied by Russia.
