Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) has touted the iPhone 15 Pro’s new titanium design as one of the highlights of its latest flagship, but it may not be particularly durable.

“The iPhone 15 Pro’s initial drop test shows that the titanium design with rounded edges is actually less durable than the stainless steel design of the iPhone 14 Pro,” said AppleTrack’s Sam Kohl.

The titanium sides of the iPhone 15 Pro ultimately distribute the pressure of the impact across the front and back glass, causing spiderweb-like cracks. While these cracks don’t need to be repaired and the glass replaced right away, you will need to do so at some point.

On the other hand, the iPhone 14 Pro’s stainless steel band managed to absorb much of the shock from drops on a concrete floor, making the phone last longer. The band itself showed dents and scratches fairly quickly, but did a better job of maintaining overall structural integrity.

The video shows the iPhone 15 Pro cracking halfway through the drop test, while the iPhone 14 Pro remains in near-perfect condition until the end.

Why it matters: At some point, the drops also affected the iPhone 15 Pro’s display, with only white pixels visible on the bottom half. To make matters worse, the camera module has also become detached from the back of the phone.

“Replacing a defective display on the iPhone 15 Pro costs $329, as with its predecessor. However, replacing the back glass is now cheaper, costing $169 compared to $499 for the iPhone 14 Pro,” Benzinga said.

However, it’s worth noting that while titanium isn’t more durable, it did help Apple reduce the overall weight of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max – both phones are nearly 10% lighter than their predecessors.
