Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis apologized over the weekend for letters the couple sent in support of Danny Masterson during his sexual assault trial.
What did Kutcher and Kunis say?
The couple posted a video to their Instagram page on Saturday expressing support for the victims in the case and noting that they were aware of “the pain” their letters caused.
“We recognize the pain caused by the character letters we wrote on behalf of Danny Masterson,” Kutcher said. “We support victims. We have done this in the past through our work and will continue to do so in the future,” Kunis continued.
Kutcher further explained that Masterson’s family asked her to provide letters to the judge to “represent the person we knew for 25 years.” Kunis added that the letters were not written to “question the legitimacy of the justice system” or the verdict, but rather were intended for the judge to read.
“They were intended for the judge to read and not to undermine the victims’ statements or re-traumatize them in any way,” Kutcher added. “We would never want to do that and we are sorry if that happened.”
“Our condolences go out to every single person who has ever been a victim of sexual assault, sexual abuse or rape,” Kunis said at the end of the video.
Kutcher and Kunis were two of more than 50 people who submitted letters to the judge in the Masterson trial. Both letters eventually made their way onto the internet, and many people were quick to criticize the couple for what they said in them.
Kutcher’s letter was criticized for leading people to believe the actor was trying to raise Masterson’s daughter in the case, while Kunis’ letter was criticized after the actress described Masterson as an “amazing friend, confidant and, most importantly, a standout older brother figure.” “had referred to. ”
Last week, Masterson, best known for his roles on Netflix’s “That ’70s Show” and “The Ranch,” was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for raping two women. The actor was convicted and found guilty on two of three counts of forcible rape earlier this year.
