According to Euromonitor International, Paris is once again the best city in the world to travel to.

The city topped the market research firm’s annual Top 100 City Destinations list, which compares cities across 55 metrics in six categories: economic and business performance, tourism performance, tourism infrastructure, tourism policy and attractiveness, health and safety and sustainability.

Dubai took second place on the list, followed by Madrid (No. 3) and Tokyo (No. 4) – with Japan’s capital entering the top 10 list for the first time “thanks to better developments in”. [its] Tourism infrastructure,” the report said.

The full list is dominated by European cities, which took seven of the top 10 spots and 63 of the top 100 spots. According to the report, this is due to “rapid urbanization and widespread technology adoption” in the region.

But Asian cities are gaining ground, showing significant improvement over the 2022 Euromonitor rankings.

Tokyo is also the only Asian city in the top 10 list, although the city-state of Singapore comes in at just 11th place – moving up four places from 15th on the 2022 list.

Five Japanese cities made it into the 2023 top 100 list: Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Sapporo and Fukuoka.

Outstanding cities

The report highlighted cities that stood out in some of the 55 categories in which they were evaluated.

  • Madrid ranked first in sustainability, with the report highlighting the city’s “100% gasoline-free public transport.”
  • London has the “best tourism infrastructure” in the world: Six Senses, Rosewood, Park Hyatt, Oberoi and Mandarin Oriental are planning to open new hotels in the city.
  • Singapore ranked first in terms of economic and business performance and political stability.
  • Macau ranked first in health and safety, while Hong Kong ranked first in health and medical services.

Additionally, four new cities made the list this year: Washington (No. 48), Montreal (No. 68), Santiago, Chile (No. 88) and Vilnius, Lithuania (No. 92), due to their improved tourism performance , the report says.
