Talks to end the SAG-AFTRA union strike collapsed last week. They have been on strike since July. However, the Hollywood studios paused the negotiations because they “were no longer moving us in a positive direction.”
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) said: “After extensive discussions, it is clear that the gap between AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA is too great.”
Currently, neither side can agree on the union’s proposed share of streaming revenue. The AMPTP claims this would cost $800 million a year, while SAG-AFTRA insists the figure is overstated by 60 percent.
The union is demanding a share of streaming revenue for all covered shows — including special streaming projects as well as films and television series licensed from other platforms — which would represent a major step beyond the Writers Guild of America’s newfound success . Base bonus.
In a statement, AMPTP said: “SAG-AFTRA’s current offer included an audience bonus that alone would cost more than $800 million per year – which would impose an unsustainable economic burden.”
“SAG-AFTRA has provided few, if any, actions on the numerous remaining outstanding items.”
While SAG-AFTRA has called for an 11 percent increase in minimum rates in line with inflation, the AMPTP wants to follow the same agreement given to both the WGA and the Directors Guild of America, five percent followed by increases of four percent and 3.5 percent.
The organization continued: “After meaningful conversations, it is clear that the gap between AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA is too great and the conversations are no longer moving us in a productive direction.”
The Writers Guild of America strike lasted 148 days after reaching an agreement on streaming content royalties.
