Disney/Marvel’s “The Marvels” failed to get into theaters on its debut weekend, grossing a paltry $47 million at the domestic box office. The picture ranks as the lowest-grossing opening ever for an MCU film, falling behind the $55 million opening of 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. Yikes!

Brie Larson’s superhero epic only grossed $110 million worldwide. With a production budget of over $200 million, that’s obviously not a good sign for the once-mighty Marvel Studios. Where did it all go wrong? Deadline understands that audiences have grown weary of the brand due to the numerous TV shows and films over the years, many of which have been very poor in quality. Others believe superhero fatigue is the reason.

Whatever the reason, hopefully the studio will be able to rectify things in the future and get back to producing the kind of must-see films that led to so much box office success just four years ago.

Other mentions this weekend include A24 and Sofia Coppola’s “Pricilla,” which grossed $4.8 million (-4%) in its second weekend and earned $12.7 million in limited release. Alexander Payne’s (really good) “The Holdovers” expanded to 778 theaters and grossed $3.2 million, bringing its total to $4.27 million. The pop musical “Journey to Bethlehem” grossed just $2.42 million from 2,002 theaters but received an A CinemaScore.

This weekend sees the release of the prequel “The Hunger Games,” “The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “Trolls Band Together” and the horror film “Thanksgiving.” Will any of these offers boost the box office?
