Matthew Vaughn’s “Argylle” grossed just $18 million domestically and $35 million worldwide in its debut weekend, according to Deadline. Apple’s $200 million action comedy boasts an all-star cast but failed to stand out due to mediocre reviews and confusing trailers that never fully sold the premise.

“Argylle” marks Apple’s third straight dud, following the high-profile performances of “Napoleon” ($218.4 million worldwide) and “Killers of the Flower Moon” ($156.4 million), theirs Production cost more than $150 million. The trade points out that the purpose of these big-budget vehicles is to drive traffic to Apple TV+. It is therefore difficult to estimate how these increasing losses will affect the studio. Obviously it is not a sustainable form of success.

“Argylle” marks Vaughn’s second consecutive box office disappointment after 2021’s “The King’s Man” grossed $121 million worldwide. Before that, his films did reasonably well, but “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” remains his highest-grossing film with $408 million worldwide.

In any case, the only other new release was Fathom Event’s fourth season of The Chosen, which grossed $7.4 million in its debut. The Beekeeper came in third with $5.2 million (-21%), while Wonka came in fourth with $4.76 million (-16%).

There doesn’t seem to be anything positive at the box office either. This week sees the release of the bizarre comedy Lisa Frankenstein and the thriller Out of Darkness. Sony’s “Madame Web” hits theaters in two weeks, but early projections have the Spider-Verse flick grossing a modest $25 million to $35 million in its first weekend. Otherwise, Hollywood will have to cling on for dear life until Dune: Part Two arrives on March 1st and hopefully delivers the goods.
