James Gunn and Peter Safran’s list of DC films continues to progress.
Ana Nogueira, the actress and playwright who is currently writing screenplays, has been tapped to direct Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrowa standalone feature revolving around Superman’s Kryptonian cousin and being developed by DC Studios.
There is no director employed and Nogueira’s deal only recently closed.
The project is actually a new edition for Nogueira. The writer was quietly hired to write a Supergirl film in 2022 when Warner Bros. developed the project as a spin-off of The Lightningthen in post-production. lightning Sasha Calle was the heroine and the hope was to start another DC film franchise.
These hopes were seemingly dashed when Gunn and Safran were put in charge of a reorganized DC department. This project was scrapped as the new executives focused on creating a brand new slate that was separate from the vision of former DC Films boss Walter Hamada. Beginning of the year, Supergirl It turned out to be a project with no connection to this list at all lightning Movie. Rather, it was now linked in title and story to a Tom King comic book miniseries released in 2021 and 2022 that attempted to redefine the character as something more than just a girl version of Superman.
“Superman is a man sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, while Supergirl in this story is a character raised on a piece of Krypton,” Gunn explained in a video posted to Twitter at the time. “She had to watch everyone around her die horribly, so she’s a much more jaded character.”
The comic starred Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, who, along with super dog Krypto, becomes embroiled in a young alien girl’s galaxy-spanning revenge. DC Studios is keeping the plot of the project secret.
Gunn and Safran liked the work Nogueira had done on the previous Supergirl project and quietly brought her back, even giving her an overall contract as a DC writer.
Nogueira is perhaps best known for his time at the CW the Vampire Diarieswith acting appearances including The Michael J. Fox Show And The black list. But she has also built a successful career as an author.
