Fede Alvarez, who is directing the new sequel extraterrestrial franchise, admitted he was “terrible” when he heard filmmaker Ridley Scott’s feedback on the upcoming film.

During a recent discussion with Guillermo del Toro at the DGA Latino Summit 2023, he said Don’t breathe The director announced that his “director’s cut” of the film was finished, which meant he had to “go through the incredibly strenuous process of obviously sending it to Ridley,” who directed the 1979 original extraterrestrial and is a producer of the sequel.

“I wanted him to see it before anyone else,” Alvarez explained. “And everyone warned me [that] Ridley is really tough. He’s really tough, especially when you have anything to do with his films.”

He continued: “He was really tough Blade Runner [2049], which I thought was a masterpiece, and he had trouble with it because it’s really hard for him because it’s his work. … I asked him about the new thing Top Gun and he goes, “Meh.” I’m like, “What are you talking about?” And he said, “My brother’s was original and that’s like, eh.” He really respected it, but you could see how hard it was he was. So I thought to myself, ‘There’s no way I can win this.’”

But the evil Dead The director knew he had to face his fears, no matter how afraid he was of meeting Scott in person to hear his feedback.

“Even if he didn’t ask for it, I would go there, sit at a table, look at him and get it,” Alvarez said. “Even if he said, ‘You destroyed my legacy,’ I wanted to stand in front of him and look him in the eyes. I didn’t want to get an email saying, ‘Ridley says…’”

But Scott’s reaction definitely surprised Alvarez. “He walks into the room and says, ‘Fede, what should I say?’ “It’s fucking great,” the filmmaker recalled. “For me it was like… my family knows that having a master like him was one of the best moments of my life, [who] I admired so much, even watching a movie I made, but especially something like this… and talking to myself [for] an hour about what he liked about it. …One of his best compliments was, ‘The dialogue is great.’ Are you the author?’ Yes!”

Although many details surrounding the film are being kept secret, the ninth installment in the franchise is said to focus on a group of young people in a distant colony fighting for their lives with the titular alien, a creature called the Xenomorph.

The 20th Century Studios film stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu.

The extraterrestrial The sequel is scheduled for August 16, 2024.
