British comedian and YouTuber Russell Brand has been accused of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse by four women over a seven-year period. A former personal assistant claimed that as a lesbian she was “safe” to work for him.
The allegations against the 48-year-old actor and influencer were revealed as part of an investigation by The Times, The Sunday Times and Channel 4 Dispatches.
Brand denied the allegations before they were published by the investigating media in a video posted on Xformerly known as Twitter, said on Friday (September 15) that his sexual relationships were “absolutely always consensual” during a “promiscuous” period in his career.
Through his lawyers, Brand reiterated his denial, calling the allegations a “concerted campaign” and saying he believes there is a “deeply troubling intent” behind it all, namely the fact that [Brand] is an alternative media channel that competes with mainstream media.”
Among the allegations against Brand, one woman claims Brand raped her against a wall in his Los Angeles home, while a second claimed Brand assaulted her when he was 31 and she was 16.
The second woman claimed the comedian referred to her as “the child” and sent a car to take her from classes at school to his home, the Times reported. The woman, known as Alice, said: “Russell acted like a dog groomer.”
A third woman claimed that Brand sexually abused her while she worked with him in Los Angeles and that he threatened to take legal action if she told anyone else. A fourth woman said she was sexually abused and physically and emotionally abused by Brand.
Helen Berger, who worked as Brand’s personal assistant in 2006, told the Times that she mentioned in her interview that she had a girlfriend and was later told by a manager that being gay was a “plus” for the job to be. She said her supervisor “wanted to make sure I was safe.”
Berger called Brand a “narcissist” and claimed that he often wore only his underwear around her while she was working. She said Brand openly showed intimate photos of women to his friends.
At one point, Berger said, “I leaned forward. As he was looking through these pictures, he came across a picture of someone I knew. It did something to me. I felt really sick.
“These are women who don’t expect to be shown to the guy’s friends.”
Brand, who has previously come under fire for spreading conspiracy theories on his YouTube channel, is expected to perform a comedy gig at Wembley Park Theater in London, minutes before the Channel 4 Dispatches program airs. Years in the Making” program will end. Investigation airs on Saturday evenings at 9pm.
After Brand released his video denying the allegations, he appeared to be supported by X owner Elon Musk, former anti-LGBTQ+ Fox News host Tucker Carlson, and misogynist influencer Andrew Tate. The latter is accused of rape, human trafficking and the formation of an organized crime group to sexually exploit women.
Musk responded to Brand’s video, posting: “Of course. “They don’t like competition,” Brand criticizes, seemingly in reference to the “mainstream media.”
In the clip, Brand said: “I received two extremely disturbing letters or a letter and an email. One from a mainstream media television company, one from a newspaper that lists a litany of extremely egregious and aggressive attacks, as well as some pretty stupid things like my community festival that should be stopped so I shouldn’t be able to support the mainstream narrative. “But amidst this litany of astonishing, rather baroque attacks, there are some very serious allegations that I absolutely refute.
“These allegations relate to the time when I was working in the mainstream, when I was in the newspapers all the time, when I was in the cinema. And as I’ve detailed in my books, I was very, very promiscuous.
“During this period of promiscuity, the relationships I had were absolutely always consensual. I was always transparent back then, almost too transparent, and I am the same now.”
