Palestinian-American supermodel Gigi Hadid has apologized for writing on Instagram that Israel is the only country that holds children as prisoners of war and that Israel kidnapped, raped and tortured Palestinians for years “before October 7th.” .
“I shared something that I did not fact-check or think deeply about before reposting,” Hadid, 28, wrote in a new post to her 79 million Instagram followers on Tuesday. “I tried to highlight that Palestinian children arrested by the IDF are often not afforded the same rights as an Israeli child accused of the same crime. Unfortunately, I used the wrong example to illustrate this and I regret that.”
Her original post included a photo of Ahmed Mansara, who stabbed a police officer and a 13-year-old boy in East Jerusalem in 2015 when he was 13 years old. Hadid also shared a video on her Instagram in which she claimed that Israelis have long been harvesting the organs of dead Palestinians without their consent.
Gigi Hadid and her younger sister Bella Hadid, also a famous model, have sharply criticized Israel by covering the war between Israel and Hamas, which began on October 7 after Hamas attacked parts of southern Israel. But Hadid has also called on activists to ensure the safety of Jews while standing up for Palestinians, and she emphasized this in her apology on Tuesday.
“I would also like to reiterate that it is NEVER OK to attack anyone, which of course includes Jews. It is NEVER OK to take innocent people hostage. Harming someone BECAUSE they are Jewish is NEVER OK,” she wrote. Jewish music mogul Scooter Braun criticized Hadid for mentioning Mansara in her first post. Israeli supermodel Bar Refaeli also weighed in, calling Mansara a terrorist on Instagram.
“I know people mean well, but when you say a child was kidnapped, it turns out it was a teenager who accidentally stabbed two innocent civilians, including a 12-year-old, on camera and then said: ‘I wanted to stab Jews.’ “Let’s get our facts straight before we spread them to 78 million people,” Braun wrote. Hadid is one of the most famous models in the world and has appeared on the covers of most top magazines and in top fashion shows around the globe. Her high profile makes her one of Israel’s most prominent critics in pop culture.
Her father, Mohamed Hadid, a well-known luxury real estate developer in Los Angeles, was born in Nazareth, Israel. His family fled to Lebanon during Israel’s War of Independence in 1948.
