For tech fans, early September is like the first rollercoaster ride of anticipation, waiting to experience all the twists and turns of the upcoming device launches. And that’s exactly how it felt this week as iPhone 15 and Google Pixel 8 Pro rumors collided with the IFA 2023 tech trade show and big launches from Sonos and GoPro.
The new Hero 12 Black actually looks like the ideal action cam version of a fast-paced rollercoaster, although GoPro somehow ruined the surprise by revealing that a better camera (the GoPro Max 2) is on the way. Elsewhere, Netflix is new Pain addicts The trailer gave us a splash of crime thriller hype and we indulged our inner AV nerd with a special TechRadar home theater week.
So if you missed the week’s news and need a meaningful test of your financial discipline, here are the seven biggest tech stories we saw in the week leading up to the iPhone release…
7. Google leaked the Pixel 8 (again) to kill the iPhone
Google has had a really hard time keeping its Pixel 8 Pro phone secret – not only did it accidentally post a marketing image last week, but it also briefly revealed its new flagship in its online phone simulator afterwards.
Given that this was the week of the biggest iPhone hype, the timing was a little suspicious – but it gave us a nice break from looking at fake iPhone 15 unboxings. The “leaks” revealed the colors we can expect (not a rumored jade shade, unfortunately) and the inclusion of a mysterious temperature sensor.
Following the leaks, Google announced that the Pixel 8 Pro will actually launch on October 4th alongside a new Pixel Watch 2. All very nice, Google, but we’ll give you the attention you need after the Apple event on September 12th.
6. IFA 2023 gave us an impressively long gadget wish list

The IFA is one of the largest technology trade fairs in the world and did not disappoint us this year. We’ve had smarter robo-vacuums, ridiculously large TVs, smarter-looking smartwatches, the future of TV speakers and…eye massagers.
That last one is as strange as it sounds, but not unpleasant! Of course, there were also more traditional technology launches, including the Honor Magic V2 and the Shure Aonic 50 Gen 2 headphones (both pictured at the top of this page).
If you’d like to see the full list of our favorites, we’ve also compiled our 13 favorite products we saw in our Best of IFA 2023 Awards.
6. Home Theater Week took our inner AV nerd to the next level
CEDIA Expo 2023, which concludes this weekend, is the largest trade show in North America for the custom installation industry. The best part of the expo – at least in our opinion – are the high-end home theater demos, showcasing the latest developments in projector, video wall and immersive audio technology.
In the week leading up to CEDIA Expo 2023, we published a number of home theater-related features, including how-to guides, best-of lists, and an exclusive Money No Object review of a high-end media server. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it together, because for us every week is home theater week.
5. The trailer for “Pain Hustlers” filled us in on the crime thriller hype
New Netflix movies are a dime a dozen these days, and the world’s best streaming service is constantly updating its movie library with original films and licensed content.
However, few look as dramatically exciting and explosively exciting as Pain addictswhich will be released on Netflix on October 27th. The first trailer for the upcoming crime thriller was released earlier this week (September 5) and in our opinion, Pain Hustlers looks like a medical film Wolf of Wall Street.
If that’s not enough to generate excitement, perhaps the lead trio will. Marvel alum Chris Evans, A quiet placeThis is Emily Blunt and The untouchables“Andy Garcia are all part of one of potentially the best Netflix movies of 2023.”
3. GoPro launched the Hero 12 Black and then announced a more exciting action camera
This week, the GoPro Hero 12 Black launched with five professional upgrades – including two-channel audio and GP-Log for color correction. But it’s also one of the smallest updates we’ve seen to GoPro’s flagship action camera, which meant our attention was immediately drawn to the company’s comment that a successor to the GoPro Max (its 360-degree camera) is also “in progress”. .
In our opinion, the best 360° cameras – especially the Insta360 The GoPro Max was one of the first pioneers of the genre, but is now almost four years old – so we’re very excited to see what GoPro has been working on in that time.
The development of the GoPro Max 2 may explain why the Hero 12 Black was so disappointing – and hopefully we won’t have to wait another year to see it.
2. The Sonos Move 2 delivered two big upgrades at a higher price
Sonos has announced an update to its first-ever portable speaker – and like its predecessor, is pushing the idea of the “portable.”
The Sonos Move 2 is still a hefty 3kg device, but Sonos has improved the sound to create something stereo-like from a single device and more than doubled the battery life to 24 hours.
Sonos immediately increased the price – is it worth it? Well, here is all the information about it, you have to decide for yourself about your wallet.
1. The iPhone 15 rumors were in full swing – and the cameras will be the stars
Apple’s big iPhone 15 event begins on September 12, meaning this week has seen the traditional deluge of rumors about everything from the Pro series’ new action button to possible price increases – but the most promising speculation concerns the new ones Phone cameras.
A report from TrendForce claimed that the iPhone 15’s camera upgrades will be the “star of the show” at Apple’s September event. Why? Well, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are expected to get a new Sony sensor with improved dynamic range, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max is said to come with the long-awaited periscope zoom.
We don’t yet know exactly how long this zoom can be extended. Reports vary between 5x, 6x and 10x optical zoom. But what is guaranteed is that Apple will probably have some photography software surprises in store too. If you haven’t added it to your Calendar app yet, here’s how to watch the Apple event online.
