James Cameron fans have been calling for an HD home video release of James Cameron for years The abyss, his 1989 science fiction film about a team of underwater explorers attempting to salvage a sunken submarine. The film was a best seller on VHS, Laserdisc and DVD, and Cameron had the film remastered into a “Special Edition”, which he also released on various home video formats in the 1990s. If you went to a video store regularly at this time, the black and blue cover would be the case Abyss Box art is burned into your brain.
But The abyss For some reason I never got a Blu-ray release, let alone a 4K release. And I suspect technically that’s still not the case. But a restored version of The abyss Special edition hits theaters next month. And presumably after the big screen re-release there will finally be a home video for Cameron bosses who believed in the project for so long.
Cameron himself announced the re-release on his social media accounts and revealed this The abyss has been “remastered in 4K” for this return to theaters. “If you’ve never seen the film,” he added, “you can experience it this way. And if you do, you’ll see the movie I. The plan was actually to throw in some big surprises that weren’t in the originally released version.”

The abyss Starring Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, an estranged couple at the center of this deep-sea rescue mission. Their struggle to work together despite their broken relationship in the midst of a crazy big-budget adventure with incredible special effects is essentially the template for the films Cameron makes afterward; True LiesThe Avatar Movies and even Titanic to a certain degree. (Titanic is also a film about love, set against the backdrop of a sunken ship.)
What nerds really want is the Blu-ray (or I guess the 4K now); This has been at the top of the list of most needed discs for many years. But the chance to see the restored film on a big screen is, in my opinion, a pretty good reason to delay the highly anticipated release a little longer.
