So… I would say if you were hoping Martin Scorsese would direct one Fool killer movie, or the Russo brothers wanted to do a remake taxi driveryou should probably give up on that dream right here and now.
That’s because the ongoing disputes between Scorsese and Marvel somehow continue to linger and fester. Scorsese has made no secret of his disinterest in Marvel films in general – and has also publicly (and recently!) stated that film lovers need to “save the cinema” from epic mega-franchise films. Of course, the Russos spent years at the helm of one of these mega-franchises and directed two Captain America Movies and two avenger films, including Avengers: Endgamewhich became one of the highest-grossing films in the history of cinema.
And that’s the none-too-subtle theme of Joe Russo’s response to Scorsese’s occasional disparagement of Marvel in the press. Russo made a video inspired by one of Scorsese’s own viral clips to promote his latest film. Flower Moon Killer, in which Scorsese “governs” a dog named Oscar. (Get it? Oscar?) In Russo’s version, after Scorsese and Oscar appear, the Endgame Co-director says: “I love Schnauzers, they are really cute. And his name is Oscar, which is really cute.”
The camera then zooms out to show Russo with his own mustache, named (at least for the purposes of this video) “Box Office.”

The only way to read the video is as a dig at Scorsese Flower Moon KillerThe box office is solid ($84 million worldwide and counting), but it’s not nearly in the same league as Avengers: Endgame (which grossed $2.79 billion in theaters in 2019). In fact, Scorsese has never scored anything close to this level; his most successful film of all time The Wolf of Wall Streetwhich grossed $389 million worldwide.
However, something tells me Scorsese isn’t too devastated by this fact. (It’s perhaps also worth noting that nothing the Russos directed outside of Marvel ever came close to being Scorsese’s greatest hits; their biggest non-Marvel hit was You, me and Dupree, which grossed $130 million worldwide.) But Russo is clearly proud of his accomplishments at Marvel, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with that. I don’t know if I personally would have made this video. (In fact, I know I wouldn’t have!) I’m not sure what the end game is here. (Sorry.) But to each their own.
Flower Moon Killer is now playing in cinemas everywhere. Avengers: Endgame is currently streaming on Disney+.
