Director Ben Taylor

Taylor said in a statement:

“I’m a lifelong fan of Jack Thorne and it was so exciting to work with him and Rachel on my first feature film. As the proud father of two boys made possible only through IVF, this story is very close to my heart. It is an honor to bring to life the journey of this heroic trio, whose world-changing work only came about against unimaginable odds. Thomasin, James and Bill – along with the rest of the cast – are disgrace of wealth. I’m delighted that Pathe, Wildgaze and Netflix have entrusted me with this brilliant story.”

Jack Thorne added:

“It took Rachel and I seven rounds of IVF to conceive Elliott. So when the opportunity arose to tell the story of the pioneers, I jumped at the chance and suggested that Rachel might like to jump, too. The more we found out, the more amazed we were at the audacity of the science and the lack of support from the scientific community. It’s an incredible story. It was a joy to work on this with our incredible cast, the wonderful director Ben and the brilliant producers at Wildgaze, Pathe and Netflix.”

Joy is produced by Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey of British production company Wildgaze, while Cameron McCracken serves as executive producer for Pathe.

What is the plot? Joy?

Here is a brief description from Netflix Joy:

“Spanning from 1968 to 1978, the film follows three trailblazers who face opposition from church, state, media and the medical establishment in their hunt for the world’s first ‘test tube baby,’ Louise Joy Brown.”

The obstetrician and gynecologist Patrick Steptoe, the physiologist Robert Edwards and the nurse and embryologist Jean Purdy are considered pioneers. The three were pioneers in reproductive medicine and Edwards was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 2010. Steptoe and Purdy were not awarded because both died in 2010 and the Nobel Prize is not awarded posthumously.

The film is titled after the middle name of Louise Joy Brown, the first person born through in vitro fertilization on July 25, 1978. Her birth, following a procedure developed in Britain, was praised as one of the “most remarkable medical breakthroughs of the 20th century”.

Louise Brown celebrated her 40th birthday in 2018 and a book was published around the same time.
