The multiverse is an important element in the current story arc presented in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But while many characters seem to be aware of the multiverse as a concept, that doesn’t mean everyone knows everything about it. Loki’s experience with the TVA is a key example of an aspect of the multiverse that no one seems to be fully aware of, and Loki Director Dan Deleeuw says he doesn’t think anyone outside of the TVA in the MCU knows of their existence, other than the characters who see literally everything.

While the multiverse is a well-understood concept in Marvel Comics, what it is in the MCU is a little less clear. We know it from films like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness that there are those within the MCU who are at least aware of the multiverse as a concept. But does anyone know of an organization that, until recently, actually prevented the multiverse from existing altogether? CinemaBlend had the opportunity to chat with Dan Deleeuw, the director of Loki and we asked him who else in the MCU knows about the existence of the TVA. He believes that no one outside the organization knows about it, except of course the observers, because they see everything. He explained…

We founded this? Um, I don’t know, I mean…well, a guard would definitely know. You know, whether or not… I don’t know. I think we’ve kept it a good secret from everyone so far.

The Guardians were spied on for the first time in a scene Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but that was mostly just a gag. One Watcher played a much more important role What if…? This animated series was all about the multiverse and discovering alternate realities. So clearly the Watcher really sees everything, not just in one reality, but in all.

Although it seems anything but certain that the events of Loki will be key to the larger multiverse saga, but what’s less clear is how important the TVA will actually be. We are led to believe that the Multiverse technically did not exist before the death of He Who Remains because the TVA specifically prevented its existence. There are still many questions to be answered.

Although I wouldn’t expect a guard to show up Loki Season 2 makes it more likely that we’ll see a live-action Watcher at some point throughout the multiverse saga. Given their ability to see everything, their knowledge could certainly come in handy, provided they are willing to put in the effort. Perhaps What if…? Season 2 will tell us more about the Guardian and his place in the multiverse.
