Man is airlifted to hospital after being surrounded and attacked by a herd of cows on the beach on the picturesque island of Barra

A man has been taken to hospital after he was surrounded and attacked by cows on a remote Scottish beach.

The man and his two female companions were trapped by the cattle on Traigh Eais beach in Barra on Saturday evening.

Police, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Barra Coastguard Rescue Team all attended the scene after the alarm was raised at around 8pm.

A Stornoway Coastguard spokesman said: “A man and two women were reported to have been trapped by cows and the man had suffered a blow to the chest and was also in shock.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed a local team attended to provide lights.

It is also believed the farmer was present and the incident concluded just before 10pm.

The man was flown to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow and the two women were taken to St Brendan’s Hospital in Castlebay for treatment.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “At around 8.05pm on Saturday 16 September 2023, police and emergency services were called to Eoligarry, Barra, following reports of three people, a man and two women, being injured by a herd of cows A bull was injured while walking between Traigh Eais and Traigh Mor.

“A 56-year-old man was flown by ambulance to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (Glasgow) but has since been discharged.” The two women were treated at St Brendan’s Hospital in Castlebay and have also been discharged.

“All parties were advised and supported. No further police operations.’

Western Isles MP Angus MacNeil, who lives in Barra, added: “This is obviously a very disturbing incident, we wish everyone involved a speedy recovery.”

Last year, Barra Airport ranked first in a survey of the top six must-see runways in the world.

It was the latest accolade for the small island airport – the only runway in the world where scheduled flights land on a tidal beach.
