22-year-old Dalit woman found dead at farmland in Mehsana

A 22-year-old Dalit woman was found dead at a farmland in Mehsana district’s Visnagar taluka on Thursday. The body was found by an agricultural labourer on Thursday morning, Inspector N P Rathore from Visnagar taluka police said.

“The woman was found naked at a farmland near an abandoned house. The labourer informed the landowner, who in turn informed the police. The body could not be identified initially. A bag was found nearby and the woman was identified with the help of an identity card found in it,” Rathore said, adding that the woman’s family has been informed.

“At least 15 people are suspected in the case and they are being questioned. We have asked the forensic science laboratory to look into the matter. The local police, Local Crime Branch and the special operation group are also investigating the case,” Rathore said.

The Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch on Saturday wrote to Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi, asking why no action has been taken in regard to the incident.

The letter seeks to know why the minister did not visit the family of the deceased and why no steps were taken against the police officers who were informed that the woman had gone missing, two days before she was found dead.
