22-yr old held for ‘sexually assaulting’ niece
A 22-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting his 12-year-old niece at her residence in South Mumbai between September 2022 and April 13 this year. A case was registered on April 15 after which the accused was arrested, police said.
As per the police, the girl who was living with her parents on the outskirts of Mumbai would often visit her grandmother in South Mumbai. The uncle allegedly molested the girl during such visits, police said.
In her statement to police, the girl’s mother who is the complainant, said that she came across a text message which the accused allegedly sent her minor daughter.
“Upon enquiring, her daughter said the 22-year-old uncle would touch her inappropriately. He would come to the grandmother’s house when she came visiting,” police said. The girl revealed her ordeal to them on April 10. Subsequently the mother confronted the accused who denied all allegations, said police.
The parents then decided to lodge a police complaint after which a case was registered under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the IPC and sections 8 and 12 under Protection of Children under Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012.
