Canada Calling: Indian driver assaulted, broker awarded, dentist gets into trouble and new addition by Tim Hortons
The recent assault on Indo-Canadian Uber driver Aman Sood by a passenger in Abbotsford, captured on a dashcam video that went viral on social media, has sparked renewed calls for additional protections for gig and app-based workers. The suspect has been arrested by the police.
In the video, the passenger is seen assaulting Sood after he took a right turn instead of a left, causing him to stop the car and inform the passenger that he would cancel the ride. After the altercation, both parties exit the vehicle, and a scuffle can be heard before the video cuts off. Sood stated that he was left without his shirt or jacket.
The incident has prompted the BC Federation of Labour to demand that the province do more to prevent this type of violence against gig and app-based workers. BCFed President Sussanne Skidmore and Sood met with B.C. Labour Minister Harry Bains to express their concerns and emphasize the importance of basic workplace protections such as access to employment standards, health and safety protocols, and workers’ compensation coverage for injuries.
As a result of the incident, Sood says he has decided to rethink his plans to bring his wife and child to Canada next month. A part-time yoga teacher, Sood has been living in Canada since 2019.
Indo-Canadian broker gets a big award
It’s not every day that someone from a small community like Panorama, British Columbia makes waves in the Canadian business world. However, Sharnjit Singh Gill and his team have done just that, winning the coveted “Mortgage Broker of the Year” award for British Columbia for 2023.
Gill’s company, VERICO Superior Mortgage, is located in the bustling Payal Business Centre in Newton. Despite being up against over 18,000 other mortgage brokers across Canada, Gill and his team of five managed to clinch the title at the Canadian Mortgage Awards ceremony held on April 21 in Toronto.
For Gill, it’s the culmination of a lifetime of hard work and dedication to his craft. “I’m 76 and I enjoy my work,” he says. “There is a zeal, a drive that keeps me going.”
The secret to his success? “Going 10 miles more than the other people are doing; I work three times more than the other people and it is honesty and transparency. Most important is the trust.”
Gill’s passion for his work has not gone unnoticed. His dedication to his clients, his community, and his industry is what sets him apart from the rest. Gill and his team have built their business on a foundation of integrity and honesty, and it shows.
But Gill is quick to point out that it’s not just him – it’s the team he’s built around him that has made this achievement possible. “I have a great team,” he says. “We all work together, and we all have the same drive and passion.”
As for what’s next, Gill says he’s not slowing down anytime soon. “I have no plans to retire,” he says. “I’m going to keep working, keep growing, and keep serving my clients to the best of my ability.”
For Gill and his team, winning the “Mortgage Broker of the Year” award is just the beginning. They’re already looking ahead to the future, and the next challenge that lies ahead. With their passion, dedication, and commitment to their clients, there’s no doubt they’ll continue to achieve great things in the years to come.

A new addition to breakfast
Tim Hortons has just launched a brand new breakfast item that’s bound to satisfy any cravings for something buttery and flaky. The Everything Croissant Breakfast Sandwich has just hit stores across Canada and it’s already got people talking.
Tallis Voakes, the Director of Culinary Innovation at Tim Hortons, explains that the sandwich starts with a freshly-baked, buttery croissant that’s topped with the restaurant’s signature Everything Seasoning. “It’s got an amazing mix of savory flavors,” he says.
But that’s just the beginning. The sandwich also comes with a 100% Canadian, fresh cracked egg, your choice of bacon or sausage, and a slice of cheese. “All together, the Everything Croissant Breakfast Sandwich is an amazing hot breakfast that is a game-changer for your morning routine,” Voakes adds.
And if you thought this sandwich was only available in Canada, think again. Indo-Canadian businessman and philanthropist Barj Dahan has brought Tim Hortons to India, with locations in New Delhi and Chandigarh. So whether you’re in Canada or India, you could also soon look forward to this sandwich.
