Mekai Curtis takes on the role of teenager Kanan Stark in the third season of Power Book III: Raise Kanan. Long-time fans of the Performance The universe could recognize Kanan from the original Performance Series who serves as the main antagonist of the series. Kanan becomes a fellow drug dealer and Ghost’s mentor. However, their relationship faltered after Kanan was accused and sent to prison. Before this role, Mekai Curtis starred in a number of other works such as: Kirby bucket And Milo Murphy’s Law. Patina Miller plays Kanan’s no-nonsense mother, Raquel “Raq” Thomas. Building a drug empire in a male-dominated criminal underworld is hard enough for Raq, but raising her son in the midst of it all is a whole different story. Even though she still has reservations about her son’s involvement in the company, Raq is ready to stand by his side as a mother. With her roots on Broadway, Miller also has an extensive film and television portfolio with roles such as Commander Paylor in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Films and her starring role as Daisy Grant in Madam Secretary.

Set in southern Jamaica, Queens, in 1991, Raising Kanan is a prequel to the original Power series. It’s a sprawling family drama that revolves around Kanan Stark’s coming of age; Ghost and Tommy’s mentor, partner and adversary, who ultimately dies in a hail of bullets in the eighth episode of the penultimate season of Power.
Season 3 of Power Book III: Raising Kanan takes audiences back to Southside Jamaica, Queens as the Thomas family attempts to pick up the pieces of their criminal empire. After a tumultuous second season, the Thomas family is devastated as they suffer the effects of the mob attack on Raquel, Marvin and Lou-Lou. Revenge is probably on everyone’s lips, but we’ll have to wait and see how they go about it.

Educate Kanan serves as a prequel to the 2014 original Performance series and marks the second spin-off of the entire series Performance Franchise. Performance follows James “Ghost” St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick), the protagonist of New York’s most successful drug network targeting the elite. Despite having everything from a luxurious Manhattan penthouse to opening one of the city’s hottest nightclubs, he still finds himself seduced by the idea of living a legitimate life. But this king doesn’t give up his crown so easily.
Besides that Educate KananThe Performance Universe also released two other spin-offs: Power Book II: Ghost in 2020 and Power Book IV: Power in 2022. Spirit follows the aftermath of the original Performance series, as Tariq St. Patrick (Michael Rainey, Jr.) is thrown into the criminal underworld after the death of his father Ghost, while his mother Tasha (Naturi Naughton) is charged with murder. It doesn’t help that Tariq has to lead a double life as a student at an elite university. Now the latest spin-off Violence follows Tommy Egan (Joseph Sikora), also recovers from Ghost’s death. He leaves New York City and makes a quick pit stop in Chicago, only to become embroiled in the city’s drug business. Placed among two of Chicago’s biggest crews in a racially divided city, Tommy exploits his outsider status to play the game and rise to the top of Chicago’s criminal underworld.

Season 1 of Power Book III: Raising Kanan introduced the audience to fifteen-year-old Kanan Stark (Curtis), the only child of Raquel “Raq” Thomas (Miller), one of the two largest cocaine dealers in Queens. The rest of Thomas’ family is also involved in Raq’s criminal business, and with their extensive network of dealers spread across the city, the Thomas clan is not to be trifled with. Kanan wants to follow in his mother’s footsteps, but Raq is having none of it. Refusing to take no for an answer, Kanan pursues his own criminal path behind his mother’s back. But as the saying goes: “You reap what you sow.”
Over the course of the first two seasons, Kanan is drawn into the inner workings of the family business. During his journey, Kanan stumbles upon the endless web that represents his family’s secrets.
