Russian President Vladimir Putin made a surprise overnight visit to the military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don, where he was shown “new models of military equipment,” according to Kremlin media.
Footage from the trip shows he was accompanied by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and commander of military operations in Ukraine Valery Gerasimov, who were presented with what looks like a new golf buggy.
How this will serve Russia’s military objectives in Ukraine has not been made clear.
It is Putin’s second visit to Rostov-on-Don in less than a month. He “visited the headquarters of the Russian Armed Forces in Rostov-on-Don after completing his official visit to Kazakhstan,” a Kremlin statement said.
“The commander-in-chief was shown new models of military equipment,” the Kremlin said.
“The head of state heard reports on the progress of the special military operation.”

Since the beginning Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and Putin’s travels outside the security of the Kremlin usually take place at night, under the cover of darkness.
In March, he made an overnight trip to Mariupol, his first visit to territory captured by Ukraine since Moscow’s invasion began in 2022.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said at the time that the timing of the trip was “fair for a thief.”
As befits a thief, Putin visited Mariupol, Ukraine, under the cover of night.
Firstly, it is safer.
Additionally, the darkness allows him to highlight what he wants to show, keeping the city his army completely destroyed and its few surviving residents away from prying eyes.— Defense of Ukraine (@DefenceU) March 19, 2023
