Rachel Zegler’s Lucy Gray Baird is the “anti-Katniss” on the show hunger games prequels The ballad of songbirds and snakes, according to director Francis Lawrence.

While Katniss was forced to be the face of the rebellion and is deadly with a bow, Lucy Gray loves to be in the spotlight and uses her wits as a weapon. “[Lucy Gray] loves crowds,” Lawrence explained. “She knows how to crowd play and manipulate people.”
In addition to being the first tribute to the impoverished neighborhood, Lucy Gray is also the love interest of 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth), the man who becomes the tyrannical President of Panem whom viewers met in the original trilogy.
“Snow has never met a girl like this before,” Lawrence previously shared of Blyth’s character. Nina Jacobson, who serves as producer hunger games It was added in the prequel that Snow is “a young man finding his way in the world” whose actions point to “the man he is becoming”.
“He’s a shapeshifter who craves control,” she continued, “but he’s attracted to a woman who threatens everything he thought he wanted.”
According to the plot of the prequel, set just before the 10th annual Hunger Games approaches, Snow is the last hope for his once-proud family who have fallen from grace.
“Young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned a mentor, Lucy Gray Baird,” it says. “But after Lucy Gray got all of Panem’s attention by singing defiantly during the harvest ceremony, Snow thinks he may be able to turn the odds in her favor. Snow and Lucy’s race against time for survival combines their instinct for self-expression with newfound political flair and will ultimately show who is a songbird and who is a snake.”
Rounding out the film’s cast are Peter Dinklage, Hunter Schafer, Josh Andrés Rivera, Jason Schwartzman and Viola Davis.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Serpents hits theaters on November 17th.
