Sicario 3 is still happening, according to producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee.

Speaking to The Messenger, Iwanyk and Lee confirmed that a third Sicario film starring Benicio del Toro is still in the works.

According to Lee, the film was partially written when the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike began in May 2023. The WGA and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) are advocating for better pay for writers and actors, protections from artificial intelligence, and more.

“There was no need for pencils, but the idea is great,” Lee said.

Iwanyk added: “I can’t wait for Sicario 3. I could watch Benicio play this guy forever. I mean, I can see Benicio in anything, but with this character there’s no dull moment.”

Dissolution of the Sicario franchise

Directed by Dune’s Denis Villeneuve, “Sicario” was released in 2015. Starring del Toro, Brolin, Emily Blunt, Daniel Kaluuya and Jon Bernthal, the film grossed 85 at the global box office on a budget of $30 million million US dollars. At the 88th Academy Awards, the film received Oscar nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Sound Editing.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado followed in 2018. While Blunt did not return for the sequel, del Toro and Brolin both returned, the two being joined by Isabela Moner, Catherine Keener and Shea Whigham. Stefano Sollima directed the film, which grossed $75.8 million at the worldwide box office against an estimated budget of $35-45 million.

Trent Luckinbill, who produced Sicario: Day of the Soldado, told Screen Rant in 2018 that Sicario 3 would “absolutely” happen. However, in April 2023, Josh Brolin expressed doubts about the project when he told Variety: “Sicario 3, we tried to get this right and get it going, but why didn’t it happen?” How long can you wait? It’s difficult to make a film even if they’ve made money and people keep asking about it.”
