The big picture
- Disney’s The wonders The film is expected to achieve the lowest global gross ever in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with worryingly low numbers in its domestic and worldwide opening weekend.
- The film’s poor performance is due to mixed reviews, limited promotion during the SAG-AFTRA strike, and the lukewarm reception of superhero cinema in general.
- Despite a budget of $250 million or more The wonders falls in comparison to other current MCU releases such as: Eternal And Shang Chias well as DCs The Lightningwhich raises doubts about its future success at the box office.
It can’t be turned; Disney’s The wonders will struggle to recoup its massive theatrical release budget, which will most likely end with the lowest worldwide gross ever in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The 33rd film in the all-time highest-grossing film series posted worryingly low opening weekend numbers both domestically and worldwide.
The wonders earned $47 million in its U.S. debut, a franchise low, and added another $63 million from overseas territories cumulative global opening of $110 million. This is significantly less than the $455 million in 2019 Captain Marvel gross in its worldwide opening. This film created a wave of anticipation Avengers: Endgame on its way to a lifetime haul of $426 million domestically and $1.1 billion worldwide.
But things have changed since then. While Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessAnd Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 All of them have performed excellently at the box office in the post-pandemic period this year Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and last year Thor: Love and Thunder were classified as below average. Combined with the lukewarm reception that several Disney+ MCU shows have received and the waning general sentiment towards superhero cinema, The wonders always faced a difficult task.

“The Marvels” faces an uphill battle at the box office
The mixed reviews and the recently concluded SAG-AFTRA strike have certainly impacted the film’s performance, in addition to the slump the MCU brand has suffered as of late. Stars Brie Larson And Iman Vellani They only began promoting the film a few days before its debut, having received the all-clear once the strike ended. But by this point, the reviews had already dented interest in the film. The wonders The film currently sits at a score of 62% on aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and was awarded the franchise’s lowest B-CinemaScore by opening-day audiences. That doesn’t bode well for the future, especially given the cost of over $250 million.
Even releasing in the middle of the pandemic Eternal And Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings performed better in their respective global debuts. While the poorly rated Eternal which grossed $162 million worldwide, the more conventional Shang Chi grossed $140 million worldwide in its first weekend. The wonders also fell short of the $139 million that DC’s infamous bombshell grossed The Lightning made its worldwide debut before finishing its theatrical run with $270 million. Is that a realistic upper limit for? The wonders? The current all-time low for the MCU is The incredible Hulkwhich was released by Universal in 2008 and only grossed $265 million worldwide during its run.
Leaded by Nia DaCosta, The wonders also stars Teyonah Parris, Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar ShaikhAnd Samuel L. Jackson. You can watch the film in theaters and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
