With a female frontThe wonders expects to open in the $75 million to $80 million box office range in the latest test of superhero fatigue. It starts on November 10th.
The 33rd installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a sequel to the 2019 Brie Larson-starrer Captain Marvel, which totaled $153.4 million in North America, not adjusted for inflation. Tracking for The wonders varies greatly depending on the research company; NRG is looking at $72 million to $88 million, while The Quorum is looking at $80 million to $90 million.
The superhero film is unique in that it stars three female leads. It was directed by Nia DaCosta, the first black woman to direct a Marvel Studios film and the youngest director of an MCU film.
The last Marvel Studios title not to be available for $70 million or more was Ant-man in 2015 ($57.2 million). Most MCU films (or 25 of them) have a domestic opening of $100 million or more, with eight films grossing $150 million or more.
There is additional pressure on exhibitors The wonders do well afterwards Dune: Part II Due to the ongoing actors’ strike and the resulting ban on talent from doing commercials, the November 2nd release date was abandoned. Marvel Studios and Disney decided to keep The wonders on its date, but had hoped the strike would end in time for the cast to advertise.
Concerns about superhero fatigue also remain. DC was hit the hardest, highlighted by The Lightning Bombed this summer after opening domestically to $55 million. One major exception to any fatigue was Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The threequel debuted at $106 million domestically and grossed $845.6 million worldwide, just behind the second film ($863.7 million).
In the new film, Larson is joined by Iman Vellani, the breakout star of the Disney+ series Ms. Marvelas well as Teyonah Parris as an adult version of Captain Marvel Character Monica Rambeau. The actress made her Marvel debut with WandaVisionwhat mattered The wonders Screenwriter Megan McDonnell is one of its authors.
The wonders finds that the heroes are connected in a rather uncomfortable way: every time one of them uses their powers, they swap locations with each other, as was hinted at in the season finale Ms. Marvel last year.
Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur and Saagar Shaikh also star The wonders.
