Netflix is bringing together two of its most popular docudrama series for the platform’s first live sports event, The Netflix Cup, in Las Vegas.
On November 14, Formula 1 drivers Alex Albon, Pierre Gasly, Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz will compete against PGA Tour golfers Rickie Fowler, Max Homa, Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas in a golf tournament in Las Vegas.
What format is the Netflix Cup?
“The Netflix Cup” brings together an F1 driver and a golfer to compete in a tournament at the Wynn Golf Club at Wynn Las Vegas. The live event is part of preparations for the Las Vegas Grand Prix on November 18, the first Formula 1 race in the city in 40 years.
The four teams will compete in an 8-hole match on the 18-hole course at Wynn Golf Club. The top two teams advance to one final hole to determine the winner. It’s a similar concept to the series “The Match,” which brings together NFL and PGA Tour stars.
“We are pleased to see how our sports series have driven increased fan following in sports leagues and competitions around the world,” Gabe Spitzer, Netflix vice president of nonfiction sports, said in a statement. “’The Netflix Cup’ will take this energy to the next level by pitting global stars from two beloved hits against each other in our first-ever live sporting event.”

From streamer to golf course
Albon, Gasly, Norris and Sainz all appear in the Formula 1 docudrama Formula 1: Drive to Survive on Netflix. The series’ five seasons are widely credited with increasing the popularity of Formula One in the United States
“The continued success of Drive to Survive has played a significant role in the growth of Formula 1 in the United States, ultimately leading to the addition of a third American race,” Emily Prazer, Chief Commercial Officer of Las Vegas Grand Prix, Inc, said in a statement. “It’s only fitting that we kick off our first racing weekend with an entertaining event that can be streamed by F1 and PGA TOUR fans around the world.”

Fowler, Homa, Morikawa and Thomas all star in the “Full Swing” series, which has completed filming for a second season.
This is the second live event Netflix is attempting this year. The first, the April reunion episode “Love is Blind,” had technical issues and failed to load for viewers at home.
“The Netflix Cup” will air on the streaming platform on November 14th at 6:00 pm ET.
