The Strategic Committee of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has confirmed the authenticity of footage showing Russian troops shooting two Ukrainian soldiers as they surrendered.
A message posted on Telegram said: “The published footage shows the execution of two prisoners of war of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to verified information, the Russian occupiers once again fired sneakily at unarmed soldiers.”
The Donetsk region prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation after shocking footage was published.
The Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine has confirmed that an investigation is underway for violation of laws and customs of war, in particular on the charge of premeditated murder (according to Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
Ukraine’s Human Rights Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets also commented on the video, calling it a “war crime.”
“Today a video appeared online about the execution by Russian soldiers of Ukrainian soldiers who surrendered as prisoners! This is another violation of the Geneva Conventions and a disregard for international humanitarian law!” he wrote on Telegram.
“The Russian side keeps showing its terrorist face!” he added.
Lubinets said the Ukrainian soldiers “were disarmed and their hands were raised… They did not pose a threat! The Russian side had to capture them and give them the status of prisoners of war.”
