Jodie Foster is back in the awards race with her latest film, “Nyad,” which hit theaters on October 20th and will soon debut on Netflix on November 3rd. The sports biography is directed by Jimmy Chin And Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi in their first narrative film, as they are known for their documentaries such as “The Rescue” and the Oscar winner “Free Solo.” It plays the main role Annette Bening as the titular long-distance marathon swimmer Diana Nyad – the film is based on her autobiography “Find A Way” – and her attempts to swim from Cuba to Florida, which she achieved in 2013 at the age of 64. Foster plays her coach Bonnie Stoll and received free reviews for the role with us Peter Debruge of Variety called her a “vibrant presence” and Benjamin Lee by The Guardian stating that she “steals the film with a lovely reminder of her easy-going charisma”. Will “Nyad” potentially land Foster a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a completely open category?

Foster is a Golden Globe darling when it comes to awards shows. She has 10 nominations and three wins since 1977, when she was first mentioned for “Freaky Friday.” She went on to secure acting credits for Nell, Contact, The Brave One and Carnage and was also recognized for producing Nell and The Baby Dance.

Her wins date back to more than three decades ago, when she won for her leading roles in “The Accused” (1989) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1992) – both films later led to Oscar wins just three years ago in 2021 when she won in a shocking opening act for The Mauritanian. Combined with her honor of receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2013, which made Foster the fourth youngest recipient of the award, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has great respect for her.

Much like last year, the Best Supporting Actress Globe race offers endless possibilities and a big question mark as to who could emerge victorious alongside the original front-runner Lily Gladstone Now he’s fighting for the lead role in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” With the Golden Globes’ new rule change allowing six nominees in each category, there are more chances for surprises. Foster is currently tied for third place Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”) at odds of 11/2, behind the leading contenders Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) with 37/10 and Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”) with 9/2. They are all being persecuted Julianne Moore (“May December”) in fifth place with 19/2 and Taraji P Henson (“The Color Purple”) in sixth place with odds of 12/1.

There is no definitive front-runner in this race as none of these candidates are assured of nominations or wins due to a number of obstacles such as limited screen time, newcomer status, lack of enthusiasm for the film or simply because of the Film has still gained popularity to be released. This was also the case when Foster was nominated in 2021. This uncertainty allowed her to pull off a win since there was no clear choice between the nominees, and she could well do it again since her role in “Nyad” leads the film, especially in the final act, and is her character many layers that carry Diana Nyad throughout her quest and support Bening, making Foster almost a co-lead.

Even if “Nyad” doesn’t seem like it has the support compared to “The Holdovers” or “Oppenheimer” with the open field in the Best Supporting Actress category and Foster’s history at the Golden Globes, it wouldn’t be surprising if she were able to, she’ll be on the list of nominees on December 11th, potentially scoring a triumph that will propel her forward for the rest of awards season.
