“We should strengthen coordination and cooperation in international affairs.”

Hanoi:

China and Vietnam should resist any “attempt to confuse the Asia-Pacific region,” President Xi Jinping said on Wednesday during a trip to Hanoi, as Beijing seeks to counter growing U.S. influence with the communist nation.

The trip is Xi’s first to neighboring Vietnam in six years. The two nations committed to deeper ties and signed more than 30 agreements, including a pledge to expand rail links between Vietnam and China.

The two-day visit comes after Hanoi intensified diplomatic ties with Washington to mark US President Joe Biden’s visit in September.

According to Xinhua, China’s official state news agency, Xi said that China and Vietnam “should be vigilant and resist any attempt to disrupt the Asia-Pacific region.”

“We should strengthen coordination and cooperation in international affairs and jointly maintain a healthy external environment,” Xi said.

Biden’s visit was part of a global U.S. effort to contain China’s growing economic power – and ensure supplies of key materials needed for high-tech manufacturing.

China and Vietnam said in a joint statement on Tuesday that they would “further deepen and expand bilateral relations.”

They agreed to build a “community with a shared future” and said the visit was a “historic milestone in bilateral relations… contributing to peace, stability and development in the region and the world.”

Vietnam has long adopted a “bamboo diplomacy” approach and strives to maintain good relations with both China and the United States.

It shares U.S. concerns about Beijing’s increasing assertiveness in the disputed South China Sea, but also has close economic ties with China.

On Wednesday, Xi laid a wreath at the mausoleum of revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh and met with Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and President Vo Van Thuong.

Chinh said Vietnam is committed to “supporting China to develop strongly, promoting its role as a great country with important contributions to the international community, and supporting Comrade Xi Jinping’s initiatives for world peace, cooperation and development.”
