Elle Fanning Spills Details on Hunger Games Prequel: Major Production Update Revealed!

Elle Fanning Gives Major Production Update On Hunger Games Prequel Film

Scheduled for a 2026 release, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is a cinematic adaptation of the novel bearing the same title. This film explores the early days of Haymitch Abernathy, set during the 50th Hunger Games. The ensemble cast features Joseph Zada, McKenna Grace, Whitney Peak, Ben Wang, Elle Fanning, Billy Porter, Glenn Close, and Ralph Fiennes. Directed by Francis Lawrence, a seasoned director within the franchise, the screenplay is penned by Billy Ray, who has previously received an Oscar nomination.

The movie is positioned as a prequel to the original four-part series of The Hunger Games and follows the 2023 release, The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. It delves into the younger years of various adult characters known from the original series, including Effie Trinket. Originally portrayed by Elizabeth Banks, Effie will be brought to life by Elle Fanning in Sunrise on the Reaping.

Although the film’s premiere is still a while off, Fanning has recently finished her parts of the shooting. “I’m done filming it, so that’s done,” she shared with Collider. While the overall production is yet to be completed, it is expected to wrap up soon this month.

Fanning expressed her excitement about portraying Effie on screen, noting, “Effie’s on the screen, which is super cool.” She also commented on the fabulous costumes, a hallmark of Effie’s character, known for her extravagant fashion that signifies her status in the opulent Capitol. The original series featured several iconic designer outfits worn by Banks.

Additionally, Fanning acknowledged the influence of the previous films and Elizabeth Banks’ portrayal of Effie, stating, “I love what Elizabeth Banks did so much, so I’m like, you know, bow down to her! I hope I can make the fans proud.” She described the production as “fun” and lauded both the “amazing” director Francis Lawrence and the “great” cast.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is set to hit theaters on November 20, 2026.
