The Launch of Saturday Night Live UK
The UK version of the popular American sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live is set to make its debut. Owned by Comcast, Sky has unveiled an enticing first look at the British adaptation of the celebrated NBC show through a teaser trailer. In this 30-second clip, the new cast can be seen joyfully marching down a street in London, entering a venue prominently marked with a neon sign of Saturday Night Live UK.
As they make their grand entrance, a voiceover energetically announces, “Live from London, it’s Saturday night,” accompanied by the pulsating beats of “Go” by The Chemical Brothers, signaling the fresh arrival of Saturday Night Live‘s new talents on Sky.
The ensemble cast features a dynamic group including Hammed Animashaun, Ayoade Bamgboye, Larry Dean, Celeste Dring, George Fouracres, Ania Magliano, Annabel Marlow, Al Nash, Jack Shep, Emma Sidi, and Paddy Young.
Details on the British Adaptation
Sky confirmed the development of a British iteration of SNL last April and has scheduled the premiere of its six-episode inaugural season for March 21. The show is set to announce its guest hosts shortly, with reports from The Sun suggesting that Tina Fey might helm one of the episodes. However, Sky has chosen not to comment on these speculations.
The production responsibilities for SNL UK lie with Universal Television Alternative Studio’s UK team and Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video. Michaels will executive produce the series, with James Longman taking the lead producer role. The show will be directed by Liz Clare, with Daran Jonno Johnson as the head writer.
The project has been greenlit by Edgar-Jones, Sky Commissioning Executive Lisa Clark, and Cecile Frot-Coutaz, CEO of Sky Studios & Chief Content Officer for Sky. The management of Universal Television Alternative Studio’s UK Productions is under the direction of Managing Director Helen Kruger Bratt. Shanna Baynard will act as Executive in Charge of Production, with Andy Charles Smith joining as the Lead Producer for UTAS UK Productions and Sam Salter as Production Executive.
This new venture aims to bring the same comedic flair and cultural commentary that its American counterpart is known for, tailored with a distinct British twist.
