This August, Netflix is set to release Robert De Niro’s new crime thriller, rounding off its summer lineup of films.
Netflix has announced that The Whisper Man, set to debut on August 28, is based on the best-selling novel by Alex North. In this gripping adaptation, De Niro portrays a retired detective who is drawn back into the fray by his distant son, played by Adam Scott. Scott’s character, a widowed author of crime stories, seeks his father’s aid in solving the mysterious disappearance of his young son.
The narrative thickens when the duo uncovers links to an old case involving a notorious serial killer known as “The Whisper Man,” who was supposedly locked away years prior following an arrest by De Niro’s character. However, with recent child abductions and the resurgence of a chilling nursery rhyme, doubts arise about the killer’s incarceration:
If you leave a door half open, soon you’ll hear the whispers spoken. If your window’s left unlatched, you’ll hear him tapping at the glass. If you’re lonely, sad, and blue, the Whisper Man will come for you.
Directed by James Ashcroft, known for The Rule of Jenny Pen and Coming Home in the Dark, and written by Ben Jacoby (The First Omen) and Chase Palmer (It), The Whisper Man also represents the sixth collaboration between Netflix and the Russo brothers’ AGBO studio. Angela Russo-Otstot, AGBO’s chief creative officer, expressed excitement about this partnership, highlighting the film’s deep exploration of father-son relationships:
Angela Russo-Otstot: AGBO is thrilled about our sixth venture with Netflix. The Whisper Man not only promises to be a compelling thriller but also delves deeply into the intricate dynamics between fathers and sons. We are fortunate to have Robert De Niro, one of the most esteemed actors of his generation, bringing this story to life under the skilled direction of James Ashcroft.
The project, which began its journey on Netflix’s drawing board in 2022 and went into production in spring 2025, marks a notable pivot in De Niro’s career. Renowned for his roles as mobsters and criminals, De Niro transitions to law enforcement, following his recent portrayals of police characters in Zero Day and Tin Soldier.
Alongside De Niro and Scott, the film features Michelle Monaghan, Hamish Linklater, Owen Teague, Acston Luca Porto, and Will Brill, promising a stellar cast for this thrilling narrative.
The Whisper Man is set to premiere on Netflix on August 28, adding a suspenseful close to Netflix’s summer movie offerings.
