2026’s Masters of the Universe: Director Reveals Why Iconic Character Is Missing!

Why 2026’s Masters Of The Universe Is Missing An Iconic Character Explained By Director

The film Masters of the Universe includes a wide array of characters from the He-Man series, but the director, Travis Knight, has shared insights on why one specific character didn’t feature in the movie.

The eagerly awaited Masters of the Universe movie, emerging after almost twenty years of stalled development, is set to debut in the summer of 2026. Fans familiar with the franchise might notice the absence of Mer-Man, a notable villain, from the film’s lineup. Director Travis Knight revealed that this omission wasn’t due to a lack of interest.

In a comprehensive roundtable interview with ScreenRant, Knight was questioned about the characters he wished to include in the film but ultimately could not. He expressed gratitude for being able to incorporate several of his favorite characters, such as Ram Man, Fisto, and Mekaneck. Unfortunately, Mer-Man was not among those included. However, a crew member managed to offer Knight a small tribute by including a character resembling Mer-Man:

I really wanted to get Mer-Man in there. I couldn’t make it work, but if you look in the background, my prosthetics guy did me a solid. There’s a guy who looks just like Mer-Man wandering around in the crowd. So, for those sharp-eyed fans, there are a few treats like that in the film, even though we couldn’t feature them prominently.

Earlier in the discussion, Knight explained that the film’s focus on Nicholas Galitzine’s portrayal of Prince Adam, also known as He-Man, required other elements to support his narrative. He emphasized that introducing too many characters would detract from the development of each one.

Knight aimed to balance his enthusiasm as a fan with his responsibilities as a filmmaker. This approach necessitated tough decisions about which characters to exclude from this adaptation of Masters of the Universe, leading to Mer-Man’s absence, though the prosthetics team managed to sneak a similar character into the background in homage to Knight.

With the inclusion of this aquatic character’s lookalike in the universe of the new Masters of the Universe film, there’s potential for Mer-Man to make an appearance in future sequels. Mer-Man has been a staple of the Mattel toy line since its inception in 1982, serving as one of Skeletor’s henchmen and the ruler of Eternia’s seas, known for his ability to command marine life.

In the original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe animated series, Mer-Man was voiced by Alan Oppenheimer, who also lent his voice to Skeletor and several other characters. In later adaptations, actors including Scott McNeil, Kevin Conroy, and George Takei have portrayed this watery antagonist.

The Masters of the Universe film is scheduled to open in theaters on June 6, managed by Amazon-MGM after transitions between studios such as Sony Pictures and Netflix. The cast features Nicholas Galitzine, Jared Leto, Camila Mendes, Idris Elba, Alison Brie, Kristen Wiig, and Morena Baccarin, with the screenplay penned by Chris Butler, Adam Nee, Aaron Nee, and David Callaham.
