Christopher Nolan’s Early Work and Retrospective at TIFF
Christopher Nolan’s debut film, Following, was first presented at the Rotterdam film festival in 1998 before making its way to the discovery competition at TIFF. This summer, the film returns to the TIFF Lightbox as a centerpiece in a comprehensive retrospective of Nolan’s body of work, leading up to the premiere of The Odyssey.
Exploring Nolan’s Cinematic Vision
The retrospective, named ‘Christopher Nolan: Grand Designs’, is scheduled to take place at the TIFF Lightbox from July 8 through August 20. Audiences will have the unique opportunity to experience all the showcased films on 35mm and 70mm prints. Details on the full lineup of the retrospective can be found further down.
Anita Lee, the Chief Programming Officer at TIFF, expressed her enthusiasm about the retrospective: “Christopher Nolan stands as a towering figure in modern cinema, each of his films becoming a major cultural moment. Simultaneously, we see anime continuing to grow vigorously as a creative force in global entertainment across various forms,” she remarked. “These showcases provide moviegoers of every age a fascinating glimpse into the magnitude, creativity, and innovation that today’s cinema embodies.”
Special Podcast Event Featuring Nolan’s Films
As an added feature of the retrospective, TIFF will host a live episode of The Ringer’s podcast The Big Picture, which will be recorded on stage at the Lightbox. The podcast’s hosts, Sean Fennessey and Amanda Dobbins, will explore Nolan’s filmmaking career during the session.
Fennessey and Dobbins shared their excitement about the event, stating, “Having engaged in many extensive discussions about Christopher Nolan’s films, we are excited to partner with TIFF for this summer’s series. We are especially thrilled to bring our show to Canada for the first time to record a special episode and to present one of our favorite Nolan films, Tenet, to the enthusiasts in Toronto.”
Mark your calendars for the global debut of Nolan’s latest film, The Odyssey, which is set to release worldwide on July 17.
