The film Artificial has recently found a new distributor. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the movie details the events surrounding Sam Altman’s dismissal and subsequent reinstatement at OpenAI in 2023. Originally, Amazon MGM Studios was set to release the film, but they withdrew from the project earlier this month after finalizing a massive $50 billion agreement with OpenAI.
According to a recent update on X by Matthew Belloni, a well-known Hollywood journalist, Artificial has been acquired by Neon. Belloni indicates that we can expect an official statement about this acquisition sometime this week, assuming there are no unforeseen issues.
The future of Artificial had been in limbo for several weeks. Featuring Andrew Garfield as Altman and Monica Barbaro as Mira Murato, the film was complete when Amazon decided to cancel its distribution. Following this, the producers offered the movie to other potential distributors, including A24, Netflix, and Focus Features, all of whom decided against acquiring it.
Potential Alignment with Neon’s Portfolio
Neon could be an excellent match for Artificial. The distributor is known for picking up films that have been hits at the Cannes Film Festival, such as Parasite (2019), Titane (2021), Triangle of Sadness (2022), Anatomy of a Fall (2023), and Anora (2024). Many of these films not only received critical acclaim but also secured multiple Academy Award nominations and wins, with Parasite and Anora both capturing the Best Picture award at their respective Oscars.
With a production budget of $40 million, Artificial is more expensive than the typical Neon film, which suggests that the movie will need to gross around $100 million to break even.
Guadagnino’s previous film, Challengers (2024), which starred Zendaya and was produced on a budget of $55 million, only managed to earn $96 million globally despite positive reviews, highlighting the financial risks involved.
The success of Artificial in theaters remains uncertain. The film tackles the provocative topic of a well-known figure in the AI industry during a time when AI issues are increasingly prominent in public and political discourse. Additionally, the film boasts a notable supporting cast including Mark Rylance, Cooper Hoffman, Ike Barinholtz, Jason Schwartzman, Billie Lourd, Yura Borisov, and Thaddea Graham, alongside Garfield and Barbaro.
Now that Artificial is complete and with Neon poised to take over its distribution, we might soon hear news about its release date. It’s possible that the film could debut late this year or early next, potentially positioning it as a contender for the 2027 Oscars.
