A key cast member from Sony’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse suggests that the innovative qualities that distinguished the initial film are set to intensify in the upcoming sequel.
The animated Spider-Verse series, which is not yet complete, chronicles the adventures of Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) as he evolves into Spider-Man and encounters various versions of Spider-People from different dimensions within the “Spider-Verse.” It has been three years since the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and actor Jake Johnson, who lends his voice to Peter B. Parker, assures fans that the upcoming animated sequences will justify the wait.
“I believe there’s a lot of excitement to be had with what’s coming up in the film. Based on everything I’ve seen and done — just like in the first and second movies — it’s really fantastic and compelling,” Johnson mentioned in a discussion with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan on The Dink. In the films, Johnson’s character serves as the slightly reluctant and less impressive mentor to Miles.
“Following the cliffhanger in the previous film, what are you most eager for audiences to witness?” Crossan inquired. To which Johnson added: “The scenes are incredibly well-crafted, making the wait worthwhile. The efforts of the team truly merit the cost of a ticket, and I am, as always, extremely proud to be a part of this project.“
The ending of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse left viewers on a cliffhanger, with Miles unintentionally landing on Earth-42, where his Uncle Aaron (voiced by Mahershala Ali) is alive and Miles himself is the Prowler. Meanwhile, Gwen Stacy (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld) is gathering both old and new allies to locate Miles. Additionally, Miles faces a critical decision regarding his father’s death, labeled a “canon event,” which, if altered, could destroy his home universe.
The 2018 movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduced a thrilling new vision of the Spider-Man franchise, presented in vibrant stylized 3D animation. This movie, along with its 2023 sequel, featured voices like Brian Tyree Henry and Luna Lauren Velez as Miles’ parents. Across the Spider-Verse also welcomed stars such as Oscar Isaac, Daniel Kaluuya, Issa Rae, Karan Soni, among others. Not surprisingly, Into the Spider-Verse clinched the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, although its sequel did not win against The Boy and the Heron.
Despite facing significant delays since its last installment, due to the extensive animation process and story revisions, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is officially slated for a 2027 release.
In the years since, Sony Pictures Animation has solidified its reputation as a leading studio for animated films, highlighted by the success of KPop Demon Hunters last summer on Netflix. A sequel, KPop Demon Hunters 2, is currently in the pipeline, poised to become Sony’s next big animated hit. Nevertheless, Johnson’s comments reassure that the thrilling cinematic experience of the Spider-Man series remains unaltered.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 18, 2027.
