The long-awaited trailer for Other Mommy has just been released.
The much-anticipated horror film, set to premiere on October 9, is based on Josh Malerman’s novel Incidents Around the House. Josh Malerman is also known for Bird Box. The film was directed by Rob Savage, known for Host, and penned by Nathan Elston of Succession fame. It was produced by James Wan, who is celebrated for his work on Saw and The Conjuring. The cast includes Jessica Chastain, Jay Duplass, Arabella Olivia Clark, and Karen Allen. The excitement for Other Mommy began to build when its trailer was initially shown exclusively in theaters before the popular Christopher Nolan film, The Odyssey.
The trailer of Other Mommy is now accessible online through Universal Pictures. It starts with a normal daily scene where Jessica Chastain’s character, Ursula, returns home during her lunch break to see her daughter, Bela (played by Clark). However, it soon becomes apparent something is off as Bela appears anxious and conceals cookie dough ice cream.
The situation grows increasingly bizarre when Ursula first suggests making scrambled eggs, despite having prepared them for breakfast that same morning. She then opts to make pasta instead and while doing so, she nostalgically mentions a time “when you and I were one person“, questioning Bela if she remembers being in her womb. As the pasta starts to overcook and burn, Ursula creepily asks, “can I go into your heart?“, all while tears silently roll down her cheeks.
The scene shifts dramatically as the smoke alarm blares, and Bela’s father, Russ (played by Duplass), comes in to intervene. He scolds her for attempting to cook alone. Meanwhile, Ursula is seen under the table, her body unnaturally twisted. What follows is a sequence of chilling moments from various parts of the film, revealing that an entity identical to Ursula is haunting the house, leaving Bela confused about who her real mother is. When Other Mommy was initially announced, it drew comparisons to Andy Muschietti’s 2013 horror film Mama, which also starred Jessica Chastain. In Mama, Chastain’s character battles a spectral motherly figure who has been caring for her adopted children abandoned in the forest for years.
Despite the apparent similarities between the two films starring Jessica Chastain, this trailer makes it clear that Other Mommy diverges significantly in its approach from Mama. While Mama follows a more traditional ghost story arc, Other Mommy explores deeper, more sinister themes. The film also seems to provide Chastain with an opportunity for a powerful performance, akin to those seen in dual role films like Jordan Peele’s Us.
With the initial buzz and the chilling nature of the trailer, it appears that Other Mommy is set to be a standout horror film this Halloween season, potentially overshadowing other releases like the survival thriller Whalefall and DC Studios’ Clayface.
