EXCLUSIVE: Radar Pictures, under Ted Field’s guidance, is currently developing a film titled McQueen, dedicated to the legendary fashion designer Alexander McQueen.
The film is based on James Phillips’ stage play McQueen: or Lee and Beauty, which debuted in London’s West End in 2015, marking the fifth anniversary of the designer’s death.
Zach Helm, known for his work on Stranger Than Fiction and Deep Water, is tasked with writing the screenplay. Phillips is also involved, working closely with Helm on this venture.
In the original UK stage production, Stephen Wight, who won an Olivier Award, portrayed McQueen. Dianna Agron from Glee made her stage debut as Dahlia, a character who intrudes into McQueen’s London residence.
The plot of the movie is set as follows: Lee McQueen is found in his elegant townhouse, struggling with the creation of his newest fashion collection. With a presentation due the following morning and devoid of inspiration, his plans are further disrupted when Dahlia, a young woman with her own complexities, unlawfully enters his home. Initially intent on calling the police, McQueen is captivated by Dahlia’s candidness and audacity, deciding instead to engage with her.
As of now, no casting decisions have been announced. The McQueen family previously expressed support for the stage play, although there has been no contact with them regarding the film adaptation.
The production team includes Maria Frisk and Michael Napoliello, who will produce the film alongside Ted Field. Field is a seasoned producer and music executive with a portfolio including films like Riddick, Runaway Bride, and Cocktail.
Phillips expressed his enthusiasm about the project, stating, “Working with Radar Pictures and Zach to transition Lee and Beauty to film is a tremendous opportunity. Revisiting Alexander McQueen’s extraordinary vision in cinematic form is a privilege, and I’m excited to collaborate with such a talented team.”
Maria Frisk from Radar added, “We are diving deep into the dual nature of Alexander McQueen’s genius, exploring both his inspirations and the darker aspects of his brilliance. We aim to deliver a film that reflects the true essence of this iconic figure.”
Zach Helm reflected on the project’s depth, highlighting, “James’ play beautifully combines weighty themes with elements of joy and creativity. Our film aims to capture not just the life of Alexander McQueen, but his essence, in a style that mirrors his own approach to fashion: bold, challenging, yet utterly mesmerizing.”
Alexander McQueen remains an influential figure in fashion, known for his dramatic and impactful designs throughout the 1990s and 2000s. He was a four-time British Designer of the Year, led design at Givenchy, and managed his successful label. His life, however, was cut short when he tragically took his own life at the age of 40.
