Today at the San Sebastián Film Festival, Movistar Plus unveiled several upcoming projects for its 2027 programming lineup. Among these are two projects under the executive production of JA Bayona and a fresh comedy series directed by Fernando León de Aranoa, known for The Good Boss.
The comedy series, titled The Castaway, has been directed and written by Fernando León de Aranoa. Produced by León alongside Jaume Roures and Patricia de Muns, it features Belén Cuesta and David Verdaguer in leading roles.
Additionally, Movistar is set to launch a new series next year from creators Cristóbal Garrido and Adolfo Valor, titled The Brief Life. This series presents a dramatized version of the events around the 1991 Barcelona Olympics, focusing particularly on the lead-up to the opening ceremony. This production is a collaboration between Charlie Pisco Producciones and Kubik Films, starring an ensemble cast including David Verdaguer, Paula Malia, Silvia Abril, Andreu Buenafuente, Maria León, Alex Brendemühl, Pau Durá, and Jorge Usón.
The presentation also touched on two upcoming non-fiction projects from JA Bayona, though specific details were not disclosed. The announcement was made by Movistar Plus CEO Alfonso Gómez Palacio and Director of Content Juan Andrés García Ropero.
These executives also announced plans to bolster support for local filmmaking talent, starting with the ambitious goal of premiering a new Spanish film each week on their platform in 2027.
“The Spanish film industry is currently flourishing, and we at Movistar Plus are committed to supporting its ongoing development,” stated Ropero. “We are actively seeking out projects that stand out for their quality, distinctiveness, and innovative perspectives. We aim to showcase stories that are bold and untold.”
Other notable projects announced include A Family Visit, directed by Sandra Romero (As Silence Passes By), 250 Meters, directed by Daniel Monzón (Outlaws), and a series by the Moriartis, produced by Carles Porta, featuring Anna Castillo, Pol López, and Eduard Fernández.
