Spider-Man ‘Brand New Day’ Pulled from 634 Theaters: Major New Release Forces Widespread Drop

Spider-Man 'Brand New Day' Pulled from 634 Theaters: Major New Release Forces Widespread Drop

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is beginning to pull back from its wide theatrical run.

Tom Holland’s newest outing as the web-slinger has become one of the biggest successes in the Marvel-Sony partnership, not just in fan adoration but at the global box office. Brand New Day has now surpassed $2.5 billion in ticket sales, making it the third-highest grossing film ever — trailing only James Cameron’s Avatar and Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame (the latter of which briefly reclaimed the top spot following the theatrical re-release as Avengers: Endgame Encore). Despite the remarkable commercial trajectory, the film’s cinema presence is shrinking, which will limit how much further its box office tally can grow.

Box Office Mojo reports that the movie shed 634 screens from the previous week to the current one. Through October 8 it was showing in 1,724 theaters across the U.S.; that footprint has dropped to 1,090 venues and is likely to keep falling. Part of the decline comes from the long gap since the film first hit theaters — it debuted back on July 31 — and the inevitable pattern of multiplexes scaling back prints as newer titles arrive. The trend will be compounded now that Brand New Day has expanded beyond cinemas.

After months during which the film was only available on the big screen, the Marvel–Sony release hit digital platforms on October 6. Viewers can rent or purchase the movie from the usual services, including the Prime Video Store and the Apple TV Store among others. The theater losses came within days of that digital bow, so with home viewing now an option for many, the movie’s theatrical lifespan is clearly winding down.

Home-platform interest has been strong. FlixPatrol data shows that Brand New Day was the top movie on the Amazon VOD chart in the United States and held the No. 1 spot on the Apple TV Store nationwide. FlixPatrol also lists it as the most popular title on Fandango at Home. Those rankings indicate that even as the film retreats from cinemas, it’s quickly finding a new audience on streaming and transactional services.

Critical and audience reactions have worked in the film’s favor as it moved through its release windows. The movie earned a 90% critics’ rating based on 438 reviews and enjoys an almost perfect audience score of 97% from more than 25,000 ratings. With strong word-of-mouth and positive reviews helping sustain demand, Brand New Day will still attempt to pick up additional box office revenue over the coming weeks, even while the number of screens showing it declines.

Looking ahead to physical releases, the studio has scheduled Spider-Man: Brand New Day to arrive on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, and DVD on December 15. Until then, the picture will continue its slow theatrical fade while simultaneously dominating at-home charts.
