Pawlikowski to Showcase Fatherland Following Cannes Success
Pawel Pawlikowski is set to showcase his most recent film, Fatherland, at the festival. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last week, earning Pawlikowski the Best Director award, an accolade he shared with Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, the directors of La Bola Negra. Fatherland, directed and co-written by Pawlikowski along with Hendrik Handloegten, explores the complex relationship between Nobel Laureate Thomas Mann, portrayed by Hanns Zischler, and his daughter Erika, played by Sandra Hüller.
The movie is set against the backdrop of 1949 Cold War Germany and follows Thomas and Erika Mann on an emotionally charged journey through their war-torn homeland in a black Buick. Their travels stretch from Frankfurt, under U.S. influence, to Weimar, controlled by the Soviets. After sixteen years of living in exile in the United States, Thomas Mann confronts a nation and a family divided.

During the Slano Film Days, Pawlikowski will participate in a Q&A session on stage. Ruben Östlund, a fellow filmmaker, will act as the moderator. Östlund, known for his sharp satirical works, will also present a selection of his short films at the festival. Additionally, he will engage in a Q&A session to discuss his upcoming film, The Entertainment System Is Down, which is currently in the stages of post-production.
The Entertainment System Is Down follows Östlund’s critically acclaimed, Palme d’Or-winning film Triangle of Sadness. The narrative unfolds on a long-haul flight where the in-flight entertainment systems fail, leaving a diverse group of passengers to confront the sheer tedium of a technology-free journey. This setup serves as the foundation for Östlund’s latest social satire.
